iMovie ‘08 Doesn’t Support Importing QuickTime Files

This really makes me scratch my head.

iMovie 08As a proud MacBook owner, I shelled out the $71 (.edu discount) for iLife ‘08 right after it was announced at the Apple Special Event last week. I really like the new iPhoto. Unfortunately, iMovie ‘08 would crash every time I launched it. I discovered that this was due to some older videos that the new iMovie could not import from iPhoto. I had to manually delete the bad movies from iPhoto just like the people on this Apple Support discussion did.

After I was able to finally load iMovie ‘08, I discovered that my iPhoto movies were not showing up! In fact, I could not even import any .MOV files I took with my Casio Exilim EX-V7 (which is a great pocket cam for video, by the way). As it turns out, I am not the only one. iMovie ‘08 does not currently import QuickTime .MOV files!

I had to use iMovie HD (from iLife ‘06) to import the .MOV file and then open the project file in iMovie. After that, I exported the video to YouTube from within iMovie (great feature) and finally posted it on CodBall.

Please, Apple, add .MOV support to iMovie! After all, you created QuickTime, didn’t you?
