Rollin’ the Dice
On Thursday the 14th, the Boston Red Sox announced perhaps the biggest predictor of their success over the next six years. They have signed Daisuke Matsuzaka AKA Dice-K to a six-year $52 million contract.
Once again, Red Sox nation (including me) has embraced Theo Epstein’s moves, and next year’s rotation sure looks pretty good:
- Curt Schilling
- Daisuke Matsuzaka
- Josh Beckett
- Jonathan Papelbon
- Tim Wakefield
Interestingly enough, this list consists of two pitchers born in 1966, and three born in 1980. There are three members of World Series championship teams, and one member from the 2006 World Baseball Classic champion team. All of them throw right-handed.
The absence of names like Matt Clement and David Wells make this list seem more solid and less injury-prone. After all, one of these pitchers pitched in the World Series with a sutured ankle. Another pitcher routinely throws with blisters on his hands. One of them throws what is known as a Gyroball. How can anybody be worried about this rotation?
