Linksys WRT54G Firmware v1.01.0 Does NOT Work with iBook G4

Linksys’ WRT54G line of routers are the most popular and tested routers on the market. For $50, it truly is a bargain, and I am always using one. However, today I decided to upgrade my firmware to v1.01.0 for my WRT54G v6 Router. And that’s where the problems started.

First, I could not change the wireless setting from ‘default’ to ‘WPA’ in Firefox. I had to use Internet Explorer. No biggie.

Second, I cannot connect to the Internet from my iBook anymore. I have tried everything, including a hard reset, power cycles, and DHCP releases. And I’m not the only one.

Unfortunately, I cannot easily use a third party firmware solution such as DD-WRT, since it is a v6 router. Luckily, I have a Netgear WGT624 router sitting around.

I guess I should have followed the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it rule.” But I like to keep my firmware updated for the best security and performance.

EDIT: This problem was fixed by Linksys on November 27th with firmware version 1.01.1. The release notes simply say “Resolves issue with IP address assignment via DHCP on some particular devices.”

Also, the Netgear WGT624 periodically fails. Don’t get one. If you want a used one, feel free to contact me though!
