Barbaro Bonds
There were two big stories in sports this weekend: one involved a horse that didn’t win the Preakness Stakes and the other involved Barry Bonds reaching a milestone. The milestone, of course, was 714 career home runs–tying Babe Ruth for second place for career home runs.
The all-time record for career home runs is held by Hank Aaron. He hit 755. Will Barry be able to reach that number? Probably not this year. He will be 42 years old in July and he has to hit 47 home runs this season to do it; that’s two more than he hit in his last healthy season in 2004.
In my opinion, Barry Bonds needs to keep playing and prove himself. He is going to be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame whether people like it or not. He will be respected more if he can continue to play and perform well. I don’t want him to pass Aaron, but I’d like to see him come close. He needs to remind us that he is a good player, regardless of the whole steroids thing. When people visit Cooperstown in 20 years, hopefully they can say “well he would have gotten in here anyway.”
