iPod Boomboxes
I’m very surprised that the Bose Sounddock (now available in black, by the way) has sold so well. The Sounddock packs a punch, but it is not a replacement for a home stereo system. I think the reason people gravitate toward the Sounddock is because they don’t own a home stereo system or they simply like the simplicity of the device. The Sounddock is also great for college dorm rooms–and, as we know, most college students probably own an iPod.
I don’t own a Sounddock. If I want to listen to my iPod at home, I plug it directly into my receiver. It’s not as elegant a solution, but it works.
Two portable iPod boomboxes have caught my eye and I’m surprised that Bose and Apple have not entered this market. The first device is the Altec Lansing inMotion ($249.99). I’ve heard about problems with the iPod getting stuck inside the inMotion, so you might want to read up on it to make sure Altec Lansing has fixed that problem. The second device, which I found out about today, is the MTX Audio iThunder ($199.99). It has a less attractive design than the inMotion but seems like the obvious solution when it comes to buying an iPod boombox or speaker system. The iThunder also seems like the only iPod speaker system (of quality) that could handle being brought to the beach.
A couple other iPod boomboxes I have found are the iHome iH30S ($149.99) and the Memorex iMove (price TBA).
