Review: Goowy.com
Goowy is a web 2.0 website with an e-mail service, games, minis (aka “widgets” for you Mac people), a calendar, contacts, and coming soon: IM and file storage. Basically, Goowy is a free web service. I first heard of it on the Inside the Net podcast and I decided to check it out for myself.
The interface is very Mac OSX-like. If I worked for Goowy, I would be scared that Apple might come out and get me. The icons at the bottom bob up and down when clicked, just like in OSX. Also, Goowy has “minis” which they recently re-named from “widgets”. In OSX, widgets are basically tiny useful applications (such as a calculator or weather forecast) that appear in the Dashboard. In Goowy, they are the same. The only difference I found is that they are slower in Goowy than on a Mac.
In fact, the slowness of Goowy’s minis is the only major glaring problem. This, however, does not mean that I will ever use Goowy. The problem is that Goowy seems like it wants to be a one-stop-shop for everything, and that will not work for me. Personally, I use my Outlook calendar at work, and I have no need for another seperate calendar (Sorry, Goowy.com, 30Boxes.com and Upcoming.org) . Also, I don’t need another e-mail address. Gmail is great!
That being said, I think Goowy.com would be great for people with little technical knowledge, people that do not use the Internet very frequently (yet manage to get on regularly), and people annoyed with all of these different sites and just want one for everything. Goowy looks like it has a lot of potential, but it also looks like it hasn’t found its niche following.
