The Matador

The MatadorOne movie that is currently hanging around some theatres is Richard Shepard’s The Matador, and with good reason. The movie is categorized as a thriller/comedy and co-stars Pierce Brosnan and Greg Kinnear. Brosnan, who recently hung up his James Bond suit, is middle-aged hitman Julian Noble. Kinnear, who starred in two other movies in 2005 (Bad News Bears and Robots), is traveling businessman Danny Wright. The two meet in a bar in Mexico City, and their lives are never the same.

Not knowing what to expect, The Matador first appeared to me as a crime/thriller. Once Danny Wright and Julian Noble meet, though, it turns into a hilarious offbeat comedy and one of my favorite movies released last year (it was released on Christmas day 2005). The movie is predictable in its main plot, but has enough surprises in the mix.

The Matador fits all of its 96 minutes like a glove. It is rated R, mostly for language and some sexual content. If it’s still in theatres near you, don’t be afraid to give it a whirl. If not, it should be rent-able soon.

My Rating: 4 out of 5
