The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe

The Chronicles of NarniaThe Lord of the Rings box office hit of this December in my eyes is not Peter Jackson’s King Kong but instead the silver screen adaptation of C.S. Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia.

Since I have not read the books in a long time, I cannot critique how faithful the movie was; though, the consensus seems to be that the movie ends at the end of the third book. I do remember that the books were published out-of-sequence. And, I think it would have been interesting if the movie followed this pattern. Though, C.S. Lewis himself mentioned that he slightly prefers the books in chronological order.

Regardless, the land of Narnia is painted wonderfully in Andrew Adamson’s (of Shrek fame) adaptation. The cast is predominately from the United Kingdom, as it should be. The four stars of the film (the kids) are all virtually new to the big screen and backed up by an experienced cast.

The Chronicles of Narnia is, of course, the story of four children who are sent away from their London home for protection from World War II. The house that they stay in is home to a wardrobe, which is home to the land of Narnia. Narnia, however, has its own problems that the children must confront.

The movie as a whole is family-friendly. It is rated PG for battle sequences and frightening moments. I would certainly put it above King Kong on my list.

My Rating: 4.5 out of 5
