Nine Lives

Nine LivesI don’t agree 100% with this bad review of Nine Lives, but I don’t think Nine Lives is the masterpiece people proclaim it to be. The film tells the story of nine different women, each with their own independent, yet loosely intertwined problems. In essence, it’s a collection of nine different 10-minute vignettes with an all-star cast consisting of: Robin Wright Penn, Jason Issacs, Lisa Gay Hamilton, Holly Hunter, Sissy Spacek, Amy Brenneman, Aidan Quinn, Kathy Baker, Joe Mantegna, Glenn Close, and Dakota Fanning.

So, where did it go wrong? Well, the stories are so loosely connected and end so abruptly that the movie appears very pretentious and, at times, boring. Right before the climax of a story, it ends, and the next story begins. After the first vignette I was thinking to myself “I hope there’s more to this movie.”

Yes, some of the vignettes are interesting. And, yes, you will probably leave the theatre pondering life. But, you will also be thinking to yourself and perhaps say aloud “what the heck?”

If you saw this movie and discovered a deeper meaning to it, please let me know because I didn’t take much away from it.

My Rating: 2.75 out of 5
