Johnny [Damon] Cash
Everyone predicted it before the start of the 2005 season, but nobody really believed it. As of Tuesday, December 20, 2005, Johnny Damon is the center-fielder for the New York Yankees. He is taking the job from Bernie Williams, who held the position since 1993.
How was Red Sox Nation fooled? Perhaps it was because Johnny said this on May 1, 2005:
There’s no way I can go play for the Yankees, but I know they are going to come after me hard. It’s definitely not the most important thing to go out there for the top dollar, which the Yankees are going to offer me. It’s not what I need.”
Ultimately, I think this move will be good for baseball. But, the 2006 Boston Red Sox currently do not have a center fielder, shortstop, and first baseman. Meanwhile, our cross-town rivals have all-star players at every position but second base (sorry Robinson Cano). The Red Sox are once again the underdogs, and have to prove that they can win the AL East by spending considerably less money.
Remember, we have Josh Beckett.
