Major League Baseball Productions Presents: 2005 World Series, Houston Astros vs. Chicago White Sox

2005 World Series DVD2005 World Series DVDEach year, Major League Baseball releases a commemorative World Series DVD. This year and last year both DVDs have told great stories. Last year, the Boston Red Sox won their first World Series in 86 years. This year, the Chicago White Sox won their first World Series in 88 years.

When one puts this DVD in, one will immediately see some advertisements for other MLB production DVDs. MLB knows how to produce exciting baseball DVDs, but they should have left the previews as an option in the special features.

The main feature of the DVD is an overview of the White Sox’s ride to the World Series narrated by Michael Clarke Duncan (Daredevil, The Scorpion King). It starts in Spring Training and ends with the victory parade in Chicago. The majority of the feature is spent in the actual World Series; the regular season overview goes by very quickly. Duncan does a good job with the narration, which is no surprise since he has done work for ESPN. The best parts of the feature are the player and staff interviews. It’s interesting to hear what was going through the minds of the players while history was unfolding.

The DVD does a great job at praising White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen for all of his hard work. Without his leadership, it is very doubtful that the White Sox would have accomplished what they did.

Bonus features on the DVD include game footage of key moments and exclusive player interviews. One of the best bonus features is a flashback to Ozzie Guillen’s playing days when he fell for the hidden ball trick (twice). In terms of content, the DVD is very similar to last year’s World Series DVD. On the whole, I would say that the overall production of the 2005 DVD is superior to last year’s. Still, I think there’s a little more room on this DVD for other features. But, baseball fans should not hesitate to add this to their collection. White Sox fans may also want to add the completed boxed set of the 2005 World Series, which is going to be released in March 2006.

My Rating: 3 out of 5
