Shopgirl

ShopgirlI didn’t realize until I saw a production of Steve Martin’s play (and soon-to-be movie) Picasso at the Lapin Agile a year ago that the man was not only a comedian, but a very talented writer. I probably did not realize this because Martin also usually acts in the screen adaptations of his work. Case in point: the romantic comedy, Shopgirl.

Shopgirl tells the story of a young woman artist, Mirabelle (Claire Danes), who moves from Vermont to L.A. She works in a department store and leads a sheltered life, despite living in a busy city. Her life changes dramatically when she meets two men: Ray Porter (Steve Martin) and Jeremy (Jason Schwartzman). Both men are radically different; Ray is rich and much older and Jeremy is young and unsuccessful. Mirabelle is faced with the challenge of choosing between them.

If one can look past Shopgirl‘s pretentiousness, it really is an enjoyable film. It’s a forgettable one, but has a good story and has potential to make one ponder things in one’s life. Martin’s film is certainly worth renting. It’s rated R for sexual content and language. I’m looking forward to Martin’s future work (not including Cheaper by the Dozen 2).

My Rating: 3.75 out of 5
