Late Season Fantasy Baseball Tips

With the regular season of Major League Baseball coming to a close, fantasy baseball rotisserie leagues are currently in the playoffs and other leagues are in the final stretch. During these final weeks it is very important that you have the right players on your team, so this entry is dedicated to those players that will make sure you finish strong!

First, let’s start off with players that may be hiding in the Free Agent market in rotisserie leagues:
- Barry Bonds (OF): He’s back, and only God knows if he will play well. If anything else, having this guy on your roster will intimidate the opposition.
- Raul Ibanez (1B, LF): Fantasy owners may remember this guy and his phenomenal half-season a year ago. Make sure he’s not on the free agent market, because he can play two position and has a hot bat right now!
- Mike Sweeney (1B): Rotisserie teams may have opted drop Sweeney because of his back troubles, but lately he’s been doing his job as captain of the Royals.
- Jon Lieber (SP): Certainly not the best starting pitcher there is, but look for him on the Free Agent list. He’s been pretty steady only giving up one or two runs a game.
- Aaron Harang (SP): Harang had a tough July and early August, but he looks to have bounced back and is a good bet if you have need an extra guy in your rotation.

Now, let’s look at some of the players who point-based leagues should have:
- Nomar Garciaparra (3B, SS): Nomar is committing a ton of errors at his new position, but he is swinging his bat like it’s 1999. He might be a little overpriced in stock market leagues, but he may be worth it.
- Jason Giambi (1B): Juicin’ Giambi is hitting one home run nearly every game he plays in. He should still be affordable in stock market leagues, too.
- Jeff Kent (2B): Raising one’s batting average six points is easy in June, but not in September. Kent has done just that and should be the best bet at second because of Soriano’s slump.
- Andruw Jones (CF): Holy cow. Has this guy been tested? He might not pass Roger Maris, but he’s certainly going to end up with 50-something home runs. Make a note right now to draft Andruw early next year!
- Chris Carpenter (SP): Can’t get any more reliable than this guy… he’ll record the strikeouts and opposing teams won’t score more than three runs when he’s in there.

For those wondering, my Yahoo! Fantasy Baseball team finished third in the regular season and is currently facing off against the #2 team in the league for a chance to play in the championship. My Sporting News Ultimate Salary Cap baseball team is in fifth place (world rank 6,291 out of 22,030), closing in on fourth.
