2005 Cape League Season in Review
The Cape Cod Baseball League’s 2005 season came to a close last Sunday night at Eldredge Park in Orleans, MA. The Orleans Cardinals broke out the bats versus the Bourne Braves to capture their second Cape League title in three years.
The best college players in the country come to Cape Cod every summer to play baseball. The whole league is completely non-profit, with volunteers operating everything from the concession stands to the announcing. The 2005 season began back on June 16th, and I attended opening day at Eldredge Park. The Cardinals won in fitting Cape League fashion: winning with a walk-off base hit in the 12th inning. In total, I attended about twelve games at seven of the ten Cape League fields. Most of these were low-scoring games, and several included walk-offs. My favorite fields to attend games were (of course) Eldredge Park, home of the Orleans Cardinals, Guv Fuller Fielder, home of the Falmouth Commodores, and Veteran’s Field, home of the Chatham A’s. One of my favorite players to watch was the Hyannis Mets shortstop Brandon Paritz (Stetson). He made some amazing plays in the field, despite being a part of the most losing Cape League team in history, the 2005 Hyannis Mets.
I’m looking forward to the 2006 Cape League season and attending games at the new ball fields for the Bourne Braves and Brewster Whitecaps.
