Microsoft and RSS

It’s really amusing how large public corporations don’t take many chances. Recently, Microsoft announced that they will be including RSS integration in Longhorn. Big deal, right? Well, the company managed to spin this announcement so it made them sound like they were doing something revolutionary. They even made T-shirts that said “Longhorn Loves RSS”. I would be willing to bet that they didn’t mention how RSS was created in 1997 by their then-rival Netscape. And, they probably didn’t mention how RSS has been really popular for a couple years already. RSS integration was expected from them, it isn’t a bonus!

This is why most of the large corporations I appreciate are the ones that don’t have stockholders to please. to entertain myself, I glanced over at the 2004 Forbes Largest Private Companies List. In the top 150 were several of my favorite companies: Wegmans (#52), Mars (#3), Bose (#148), HP Hood (#93), Gulf Oil (#45), and Cumberland Farms (#111).
