China: All Websites Must Now Be Registered

Chinese authorities have set an ultimatum on all websites and blogs operated from within the country: register by June 30th or shut down. The authorities claim to have developed a net crawler system that searches for registration numbers and reports sites that don’t have one. This is the latest attempt by the communist government to control all news and information. Chinese authorities continue to block websites that it doesn’t like. Reporters Without Borders argues that this means that anyone with dissenting opinions would have to publish on a websites overseas, which could be blocked. Realistically, I think there will always be new ways for dissenting opinions to be expressed via the Internet. I think that the Chinese government is wasting a lot of time and money in an effort that will require continuous technological advances. Analogies? Fighting the flu with a new vaccine every year, or anti-virus software for the computer.
