Millions

MillionsMillions recently gained a limited release in the United States. The movie is the brainchild of UK writer Frank Cottrell Boyce, who has been working on this script for quite some time and never really thought it would make it as a movie. But director Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, 28 Days Later) picked it up, and it is currently one of the best movies playing in US theaters (besides Star Wars). While some crime scenes may get a little scary for young children, this is a PG family movie and very entertaining.

The two main actors behind the movie are both children: Alexander Nathan Etel as Damian, and Lewis Owen McGibbon as Anthony. Using a child’s point of view is one of the unique aspects of the film that makes it enjoyable. BBC star James Nesbitt plays Ronnie, the father of the boys. And the other lead roles are played by BBC stars Daisy Donovan (Ronnie’s girlfriend) and Christopher Fulford (the poor man).

The movie takes place in Britain around Christmas, just as all currency is being converted to the Euro. Damian finds a bag of money when playing by the railroad tracks, but he doesn’t know what to do with it all. He wants to give it all to the poor, but he finds it is very hard to do so. When the truth about the money is discovered, the whole family becomes involved. In the end, Damian realizes that he would rather live in a world without possessions and money.

A movie like this deserves a much wider release. It’s just a shame that this genre is not popular. The only way it seems that a non-Hollywood movie can make the wide-release is if it is a comedy (a la Napoleon Dynamite). Go see Millions.

My Rating: 4.5 out of 5
