My American League All-Stars
C: Jason Varitek, Red Sox
The third Red Sox captain in history is on pace for a career year and gets my vote at catcher. Joe Mauer of the Twins is also deserving of being on the AL squad. Mauer is off to a great start and already has better numbers than he did all last season.
1B: Mike Sweeney, Royals
If the Yankees sat Jason Giambi down at DH earlier, Tino Martinez may have gotten my vote here. But, Sweeney is the clear leader here because he his hitting for both average and power. Plus, the Royals need someone to represent them and the rest of their team is currently batting below 300.
2B: Brian Roberts, Orioles
Roberts has been sitting quietly on the Orioles franchise for several years now and has had an unbelievable 2005 so far. Somebody test this guy for steroids! He is by far the best second baseman in the American League.
SS: Miguel Tejada, Orioles
I would really like to vote for Carlos Guillen at this position, but he is current playing a little DH because his knees are bothering him. Tejada is the obvious choice here with homerun numbers in double digits and the most RBIs in the AL (tied with A-Rod).
3B: Brandon Inge, Tigers
Since there is no way I will ever vote for Alex Rodriguez, Brandon Inge of the Tigers gets my vote here. He doesn’t have as much power as A-Rod, but he has gotten on base more frequently and has gotten a hit once every three ABs. He is the only Tiger currently batting over 300 with over 20 RBIs.
OF: Trot Nixon, Red Sox
While ‘Tek is the captain, Trot represents the tenacity of the Boston Red Sox. His numbers aren’t that bad either, especially considering the fact he will need off-season surgery.
OF: Johnny Damon, Red Sox
Rockstar Johnny Damon doesn’t have the greatest arm in center field, but he sure has the speed! He also has been a great leadoff man, getting on base 40% of the time.
OF: Ichiro Suzuki, Mariners
I’m surprised the Yankees haven’t picked this guy up yet, because he’s a machine. He’s flawless in the field and he’ll get on base if you ask him to.
DH: Shea Hillenbrand, Blue Jays
Fantasy baseball team owners are well aware of Shea Hillenbrand. He was transparent with the Diamondbacks but seems to be doing much better north of the border with the Blue Jays back in the AL.
