Steroids and the Long Ball

Fewer home runs are being hit this year than last year, so far. As Peter Gammons points out, it is still too early to draw any conclusions. But, USA Today is reporting that home run in frequency is down from one in every 30.7 at-bats in 2004 to one in every 35.7 this year. USA Today fails to imply that these numbers may be down partially because of some big names on the DL: Barry Bonds, Juan Gonzalez, and Frank Thomas.

Who is the only top 10 slugger who is seemingly non-affected by the new steroid clause? Boston’s very own slugger, Manny Ramirez. To be fair, I should also mention that Slappy Rodriguez is close to Manny’s home run total and is also off to a fine start.

To be continued…
