Another Software Monopoly

Adobe has acquired Macromedia in a $3.4 billion deal. This creates an obvious graphics and web development software monopoly. Adobe has the web and print graphics software market eating out if its hands with Photoshop and Illustrator. The only competitors were Fireworks and Freehand, but now it owns them too! The one area that Adobe doesn’t excel in is web publishing. But now Macromedia brings to the table Coldfusion and Dreamweaver… big steps above Adobe’s GoLive.

What interests me most is how the multimedia software market will be handled. Since Adobe has the upper hand, we may see the SVG file format become more popular and the SWF-era fade out of the picture. Who wants to place a bet that Flash will support creating SVG documents within a year or two?

I was going to look for an official press release from Adobe, but Adobe.com is unavailable as of 10:21am (I wonder why…).
