A Tale of Two Fantasy Leagues

This year I’m participating in both Yahoo! Fantasy Baseball and The Sporting News Ultimate Salary Cap Baseball. This is my third year with Yahoo! and my first with the Sporting News. I’m pretty excited about both leagues that I am in. My Yahoo! league is the same group of guys (and gal) I have played fantasy ball with for several years (starting on ESPN’s fantasy baseball and migrating to Yahoo!). My Sporting News league consists of friends/faculty/staff of the IT department here at RIT (Dan Kennedy, Luther Troell, Liz Zimmerman, and others) and it cost $20 to join ($50 prize for winner of the league, other prizes outside the league available). Both leagues promise to take up a lot of my time.

Which league is better? I’ll let you know in seven months. But, from what I can tell right now, The Sporting News will probably take up more of my time because they have a stock market-like system where one needs to keep buying and selling players to succeed. In terms of updating stats, player profiles, and being user-friendly, Yahoo! seems to better.

Why play fantasy ball? First, it adds extra excitement to the game. I often find myself watching games of players I own. Second, it’s a non-violent way to hurt your friends. If you beat their team in fantasy baseball one week, it gives you bragging rights and a whole other week to use them. Third, maybe you can make some money. Fourth, you’ll be a more knowledgeable baseball fan and people will respect your opinion at the park. Fifth, it will be prepare you for a sports management job and teach strategy.
