Sleep Station - After the War [2004]
Sleep Station is a band that a lot of people have heard of, but nobody has actually listened to. Because they are on Eyeball Records (Thursday, My Chemical Romance), I immediately associated them with the whining emo genre and put them down low on my must-listen-to list. But, yes Virginia, good things can come out of Eyeball Records. Good things like Murder by Death and Sleep Station.
If you can’t tell, After the War is a themed album. The album has snippets of degraded war-related audio mixed in with pure rock goodness that is Sleep Station. So there are really only 11 songs on this 17 track effort clocking in at 47 minutes. The songs aren’t brutally catchy like The Format. If you’re looking for comparison bands I would say The Smiths, The Shins, Coldplay and The Decemberists. The gateway song for this record is the title track “After the War”. Along with that song, my favorites are “A Soldier’s Dream”, “Caroline, London 1940″, and “Burden to You”.
The band has a new record already coming out very soon. You can download one of their previous EPs called Von Consel from http://www.voncosel.com/.
